From the studio
I have loved crows for a long time, but learning more about their intelligence and the complexity of their brains only deepened that fascination. There is something about them that feels especially close to the questions I am always asking about awareness and consciousness. When I was accepted into the Crow Show, I knew almost immediately what I wanted to paint. Some mornings when I step onto my porch before sunrise, I see crows gathered along the electrical wires against the changing sky. While painting the background, that familiar image became distinctly Oklahoma, with the sunrise opening above the red dirt and the crows watching from their perch. As with much of my work, prime numbers quietly structure the piece. There are a prime number of crows, a prime number of eye colors, and those patterns resolve into another prime. Most of that mathematics is nearly invisible unless you know to look for it. I like it that way. Beneath a simple morning scene is another structure entirely, order hiding inside the ordinary. This piece will be part of the Crow Show at Mycelium Gallery, opening October 17, which also happens to be my birthday. The exhibition will remain on display for the following month.
