Sip Happens

A Mustachioed Vision Quest into Chopstick Innovation

I slurp up the juice from my ramen—always have. It’s the best part, the after-moment, the reward for commitment. But lately, there’s been a problem. My mustache—this unruly, glorious bramble of a thing—has become both filter and barrier, absorbing broth like a sacred sponge and leaving me mildly steamed in every sense. My workaround? A straw. Effective, yes. But lacking a certain... elegance.

So I began to dream.

What if the chopsticks were the straw?

What if, instead of switching tools mid-meal, I could remain in the flow, sip and grasp in a single motion—merge the act of lifting noodles with the act of drinking the soul of the bowl? A utensil that matched the gravity of the experience. And so came the vision: SlurpStix™.

Sip. Slurp. Stash the 'stache.

Chopsticks have long been my preferred vessel for consumption. They ask something of you—focus, rhythm, care. No fork can do what they do, not really. But ramen demands more than precision. Ramen is chaos and communion. It wants to splash your face, fog your glasses, and baptize you in broth. It wants to be drunk, not just eaten.

And the trouble is, I do want to drink it. But not through a wet mustache.

That’s when I started looking—surely, someone had attempted this. Turns out, a few brave souls had. There were “Sipsticks” from the 2010s, a kind of hollow novelty chopstick fused at one end to become a straw. Silly. Clever. Slightly cursed. On Reddit, tinkerers with flexible tubing had made wild double-barreled prototypes, little cyberpunk siphons for the determined noodle enthusiast. Some eco kits paired chopsticks with metal straws, stored neatly in minimalist rolls.

But none of them quite reached what I was after.

What doesn’t exist—yet—is the true hybrid. Two independent, fully functional chopsticks that are also straws. Hollow but sturdy. Washable. Dishwater-safe. Designed not just for novelty, but for need. I imagine them with small valves, a detachable mouthpiece, maybe even a mustache guard for good measure. Not a gimmick, but a love letter. A straw-sword for the ramen-devoted.

I want to build it. No—I am building it. I’m heading to the library soon with a 3D file in mind and a fire in my belly. I want these things to exist not just because they’re useful, but because they’re absurd in the best possible way.

And yes, I know. This isn’t a real problem. The world’s on fire. But maybe, in the face of the absurd, we ought to meet it with equal absurdity. A little whimsy that functions. A little invention that makes someone laugh while they sip the soup of the gods.

SlurpStix™ is not a solution. It’s a stance. A lifestyle. An invitation.

To be the kind of person who thinks, “What if I could drink through my chopstick?” and then actually do something about it.

Because sometimes that’s all we have: the chance to make something strange and useful. To laugh. To invent. To sip and grasp and slurp and evolve.

And so, as I stand on the edge of creation—between library printer and noodle destiny—I raise my twin hollow wands and whisper, “Let me sip what I grasp, and grasp what I sip.”
