Hustled by Unicorns

A Family-Friendly Shakedown

I remember when ownership meant something. Not philosophically — literally. You paid money for a thing, and it was yours. Yours to hold, lose, smash, lend, or forget in a drawer. Yours in the way a book is yours even if it’s terrible. Yours like a CD scratched by the floorboard of your car. Sacred. Dumb. Real.

Now we lease our lives in monthly increments. Every interaction is a toll booth. Every app a landlord. Even my daughter’s paint-by-number unicorn coloring app wants ten bucks a week like it’s hustling outside a Vegas casino. The app store has become a strip mall of digital shakedowns, and we keep wandering through it like eager pigeons. Subscriptionalism has metastasized. It’s no longer just movies and music. It’s everything. Photoshop. Meditation. Heated seats in your car. The light in your fridge. Your very sense of self — billed monthly.

This isn’t capitalism anymore. It’s post-ironic feudalism. The kings wear pastel hoodies and run UX teams. At least old landlords gave you a toilet and a doorknob. These new ones give you a glowing button that disappears when your debit card bounces. And they smile while doing it. “Your subscription has ended,” they say, with the same tone as a friend telling you your dog ran away. But don’t worry — you can get it all back. Just click here and pay forever.

They’ve repackaged dependence as convenience. “Access over ownership” sounds clean, modern, hygienic. What it really means is: you will never stop paying for anything. You don’t own your books. You don’t own your music. You don’t own your car. You don’t even own your photos — they live in the cloud, and the cloud has a billing department. We broke into the future only to discover it’s just Columbia House with a better UI.

The strangest part is that nobody thinks this is weird anymore. We’ve accepted it like gravity. People brag about their tech-stack subscriptions like they’re rare NFTs. “Oh, I just upgraded to Pro+Elite for my sleep app — it includes whale sounds and morning affirmations from a former Navy SEAL.” We are renting peace of mind from corporations that sell our data while whispering encouragement into our ears.

Maybe that’s the real endgame. Not fire and revolution — but a thousand tiny auto-pays quietly siphoning meaning out of your bank account until you die surrounded by expired logins. There won’t be a bang. Just a password-reset email you forgot to click.

So here we are. The new serfs. Billed bi-weekly by faceless platforms to access the tools of our own lives. And still we laugh. We joke. We meme about “owning nothing and being happy,” like we aren’t walking barcodes on borrowed time. But somewhere under the jokes we know: this isn’t freedom. This isn’t efficiency. This is entrapment with rounded corners and good lighting.

It’s not that we lost ownership.

It’s that we traded it away — one subscription at a time.
