Mother’s Day has me thinking about how lucky I am to share this life with Mary Ann.
I first told her I loved her in the mid-90s, when we weren’t even old enough to drive. Since then, I’ve been continually amazed by who she is, who she has become, and the life we’ve built together. But watching her become a mother has been something beyond words. Magickal, really.
I’ve read stories about partners who don’t fully show up when they become parents. People who seem uninterested in the work, the care, the presence it takes. I honestly can’t imagine that. What I’ve witnessed is the person who has always cared the most somehow find even more love to give.
The same woman I’ve watched spend her life helping others now pours that same endless care, patience, intelligence, and tenderness into our little one every day. She provides for our family financially, emotionally, and in all the quiet, invisible ways that hold a home together.
I often think about how lucky I am to have this life with her — as a husband, as a friend, and as someone who has loved her since we were kids.
But seeing her as a mother unlocked a depth of love in me I didn’t even know existed.
Mary Ann, you are a beautiful, caring, brilliant, unbelievable mother. And we are so lucky to be loved by you.
