Thirty of You

On daily writing and the readers who return

The day after Thanksgiving, on our 291st consecutive morning together at 6:05 a.m., I found myself overwhelmed with gratitude for you. There may be occasional days when a few extra sets of eyes drift in, but there are about thirty of you who show up—every single morning—to read whatever thought wandered out of my mind at dawn.

I don’t take that lightly. I don’t write for an audience. I don’t optimize, market, or measure. That’s never been the point. The point was to commit to a year—an entire orbit—of waking up, sitting down, and seeing what emerged. A daily excavation.

A ritual of showing up to the self.

And somehow, these pieces have become something larger than I expected. My writing has sharpened. The ideas I’ve carried for years—floating around like half-feral creatures in the back of my mind—have started to take shape. What once scattered into notebooks or unfinished thoughts now steps forward as theories, essays, reflections, and little experiments in meaning. And through all of it, you’ve been here. Quietly. Patiently. Every morning.

I’ve done many “Year Ofs” in my life—strange and wonderful ones. A year of not speaking on Sundays. A year of staring at myself in the mirror as long as I could stand it. A year of knocking patterns on the table before I ate. But this one—this Year of Creativity, this Year of Daily Essays—has felt different. More honest. More revealing. More like something inside me finally had enough room to breathe.

I don’t know if the essays will continue after day 365. Maybe they will. Maybe they’ll shift form. Maybe I’ll keep writing but hold some things a little closer to the chest. I don’t know yet, and maybe that’s the beauty of it.

But before the final stretch begins, I wanted to say something simple and sincere:

Thank you.

Not everyone in my life—or orbiting around its edges—wants to peer inside my mind each morning. Not everyone is interested in the strange blend of philosophy, reflection, humor, and whatever else leaks out at 4:30 a.m. But you are. You show up. You open the email. You read.

And I’m deeply, quietly grateful—for every single one of you.
