Science Is Occasionally Wrong. That’s How We Know It’s Right.

Why You Should Trust the Thing That Argues With Itself

The funny thing about people saying “you can’t trust science because it kept changing during COVID” is that they’ve just described the very reason science works. If it didn’t change, it wouldn’t be science—it would be a campaign speech or a laminated tract, nailed to the wall and left to fade in the sun.

Science doesn’t sit still. It wanders into the room, scribbles something on the chalkboard, tilts its head, mutters, erases half, tries again, shrugs, and says, “Closer.”

That’s the point. Science is a process, not a gospel. It throws a hypothesis into the air, watches it fall apart, studies the wreckage, and then redraws the lines. Every failure is a forcing point, pressure against the mirror of reality that cracks the old reflection and demands a new one. That’s Forcing Theory in motion: truth isn’t found by standing still, it’s dragged into the light by being proven wrong over and over until what remains can withstand contradiction.

COVID didn’t expose science’s weakness—it showed its pulse. At first, masks weren’t recommended, then they were essential, then we learned which ones mattered. Vaccines were silver bullets, then recalibrated into something messier but still lifesaving. Each revision was a sign of life. Complaining that science changed is like complaining that a mapmaker redrew the roads after the bridge collapsed. That’s not betrayal—it’s accuracy.

Politics and religion, by contrast, work backward. They start with the answer and hammer the world until it fits. Religion insists the truth was delivered fully formed and can never be altered. Science, meanwhile, shrugs in public, admits imperfection, and corrects itself out loud. Which one would you trust in a storm?

So when someone grumbles that science can’t be trusted because it’s “occasionally wrong,” I want to laugh. Exactly. Science is occasionally wrong—that’s how you know it’s right. Every stumble forward is proof it’s alive, the only self-correcting truth system we’ve got. Everything else is just a polished statue, unblinking, unchanging, and blind to the cracks spreading beneath its feet.
