Left Behind

The Gospel of Grievance in a Country That’s Moved On

There is no demographic in America more “oppressed” than white conservative Christians. After all, where else can you start your day with a prayer at a government meeting, get laws passed to ban books you’ve never read, tell other people which body parts they’re allowed to talk about, and still claim—without irony—that you’re the real victim here?

It’s breathtaking. Absolutely awe-inspiring. You own the culture, the courts, the holidays, the tax breaks, and most of the airwaves, and yet the moment someone pushes back, you collapse into a puddle of imagined martyrdom.

Take Samantha Fulnecky, brave theologian of the hour, who turned in a laughably incoherent, Bible-as-source-material screed in a college psych class and was shocked—shocked!—to receive a failing grade. Did it lack academic rigor? Yes. Did it ignore the assignment prompt entirely? Also yes. Did it rely on circular logic, moral panic, and religious absolutism? Of course. But clearly, the problem wasn’t the paper—it was that her sacred right to be praised for mediocrity had been trampled. What a tragedy. A modern-day passion play where the cross is made of Canvas notifications and grievance.

And so, naturally, the internet lights up with cries of persecution. Turning Point USA arrives with torches and hashtags. The governor gets involved. The university caves. Because we now live in a country where white Christian students can submit a sermon as an academic paper, fail it, and then summon the gods of grievance to intervene on their holy behalf.

Meanwhile, they’re out here banning gender-affirming care, erasing queer history, and pretending their churches are being bulldozed by drag queens.

You want to talk about rights? Let’s talk about the scoreboard. You can preach in public. Hold tax-exempt rallies for political candidates. Get your theology pumped through school boards, courtrooms, and congressional hearings alike. You’ve got God on your money, in your pledge, and above your judge’s bench. You’re not being persecuted—you’re just pissed that you can’t control everyone else anymore.

You want to pray? Pray. Want to believe there are only two genders because God made it so in a 6,000-year-old origin story that also includes talking snakes? Be my guest. But don’t confuse your right to believe demonstrable nonsense with a right to force it on everyone else. The moment someone says “no thanks,” you shriek that your freedoms are under attack. But equality isn’t persecution. Academic standards aren’t blasphemy. And being told your essay sucks doesn’t make you a martyr.

This is the apex predator of privilege—biting now at the ankles of every system it once ruled, then crying foul when the prey finally kicks back. Christians are not being silenced in America. They’re just being disagreed with, and disagreement, for people used to total control, feels like crucifixion.

You didn’t lose your freedom—you just lost your monopoly on truth. And now you’re rage-writing Facebook posts at 3 a.m. about demonic transgender teachers and liberal indoctrination, because someone had the audacity to suggest that maybe, just maybe, your theology isn’t a substitute for evidence.

No one is stopping you from worshipping. They’re just tired of your worship requiring the rest of us to participate.

So cry persecution if it helps you sleep. Print your victimhood on bumper stickers. Sell it as merch at the megachurch. But know this: we see the playbook. You’re not oppressed. You’re just offended that the rest of us exist.

And deep down, you know what’s really happening. The latest data shows it plainly: institutional belief is crumbling. Church attendance is in free fall. The fastest-growing religion in America is “none.” The cross is fading, not because it’s banned, but because people stopped buying what you’re selling. These aren’t the cries of the faithful. These are the death throes of cultural dominance. The writing is on the wall, and it isn’t scripture — it’s stats.

You’re not being persecuted. You’re being left behind.
