Over the Pass

Growing up, I spent a couple of weeks each summer at our family cabin in the mountains. The days were filled with fishing, off-roading, exploring, and evenings gathered around campfires with family and friends. But some of my favorite memories are of the hummingbirds. We hung feeders all around the porch and spent hours watching and listening to those tiny, impossibly fast creatures darting about. I’d sit perfectly still, holding my breath, with a finger stretched beneath a feeder, hoping one might decide I was a suitable place to land. Over the Pass grew out of those memories. The mountains, the flowers, the hummingbirds, and the quiet excitement of being close enough to something wild that, for a moment, it might choose to stay.
