From the studio
I just dropped my piece “House Call” off at @dnagalleries for the July community-themed art show starting this Thursday! Growing up in a small town as the child of a physician deeply shaped my understanding of community: what it means to show up, to help, to be known, and to carry responsibility in a place where everyone’s lives overlap. This 1940s doctor’s bag was in amazing condition when I found it, so I wanted to honor the object rather than erase it. I cleaned and conditioned it, painted it, then sealed the acrylic so it can still be used or displayed. The symbols and phrases are a mix of personal ethos and medical artifact. EXQVIRE VERVM (seek truth) sits alongside imagery of care, harm, intention, and the complicated question of how to exist within capitalism while still helping people. “House Call” will be on display along with work from nearly 100 other artists beginning this Thursday, and will stay up throughout the month of July.
